It's the magic that fixes up audio that's very hard or near impossible to hear. For example a conversation that is drowned out by the noise of a car or wind or aircon. Or a poor recording on a messaging service or mobile phone. At an advanced level it can even help you figure out who's present in a room and the relative position of each person.

It depends on many factors, but most people are surprised what can be achieved. The audio we deal with was not recorded in ideal conditions. There can be hums, buzzes, motors, air conditioning, wind, pops and crackles - and what is called 'broadband' noise. There may be problems with the recording device, or the distance between the device and the sounds we are interested in. Most times you can barely hear what you want to hear, and that's what we attempt to fix. It is sometimes asserted that an audio file has been tampered with, and we can often prove or disprove that this is the case.

It's part art and part technology. You have to know what you're looking to take out, suppress or enhance to better hear the sounds you're interested in. We use the same software programmes as the FBI. And pro hardware devices, a purpose built audio studio and seasoned audio engineers who have worked on complex cases.

Our aim is to extract the best possible recording that we can. This can be used for a written transcript, be used as evidence to settle a matter, or to be played back in court for a trial. As audio and video media is relied upon more and more for dispute resolution we're constantly updating our skills and equipment to provide useful outcomes.
